Public Service Announcements for Secure Green Future

Here are public service announcements for time slots of 30, 60, and 90 seconds. The 30-second slots can be expected to run more frequently than the longer slots. These messages are provided by the Committee for a Secure Green Future, a ballot question committee organized under the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

On November 4, voters in several area towns will vote on a nonbinding public policy question calling for an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas pollution by 2020. This speeds up current state plans which are expected to take 42 years to achieve the same goal.

We need to move faster because global warming is advancing more rapidly than predicted. And investing in renewable energy will create thousands of badly needed green jobs.

For a strong, sustainable economy based on clean energy, vote “yes” on the greenhouse gas question on November 4.

Text:

You’ve heard a lot about the financial meltdown on Wall Street. But an even bigger meltdown is happening in the Arctic where the entire polar ice cap is disappearing due to global warming. And surprisingly, both of these meltdowns seem to have a common thread - our economy’s addiction to fossil fuels.

The rising price of oil was a key factor in the recent world economic downturn. Fortunately there is a way to stop both meltdowns: We can build a new economy that runs on renewable energy.

Recently the Massachusetts legislature called for an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050. The idea is good, but waiting four decades to free ourselves from the grip of oil is flirting with the collapse of both the environment and the economy.

On November 4, voters in Amherst will be asked to approve a nonbinding measure calling for an 80% reduction in greenhouse pollution by 2020 - twelve years from now.

Saving the planet and saving the economy need to be treated as parts of the same urgent mission. I urge you to vote “Yes” on Question 6.

You’ve heard a lot about the financial meltdown on Wall Street. But an even bigger meltdown is happening in the Arctic where the entire polar ice cap is disappearing due to global warming. Both of these meltdowns are a threat to our security. And surprisingly, both seem to have a common thread - our economy’s addiction to fossil fuels.

The rising price of oil was a key factor in the recent world economic downturn. Global oil reserves are being depleted, and any economy built on oil has a dismal future. Fortunately there is a solution that’s good for the economy and the planet: We can build a new economy based on renewable energy.

But we’ve got to act quickly. Scientists have warned us that the earth may be approaching geophysical “tipping points” beyond which environmental catastrophe becomes irreversible.

Recently the Massachusetts legislature recognized the problem by calling for an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The idea is good. But waiting four decades to free ourselves from the grip of oil is likely to result in the collapse of both the environment and the economy.

This election day voters in the House district of Rep. Ellen Story of Amherst will have a chance to vote on Question 6 - a nonbinding measure that calls for achieving an 80% reduction in greenhouse pollution by 2020 - twelve years from now.

This “Secure Green Future” option lets us combine saving the planet and saving the economy into one urgent mission. I urge you to vote yes on Question 6 on November 4.
